Door knobs are similar to door handles in that they both have the ultimate goal of opening or closing a door. While door handles are made to aid in either pulling or pushing a door shut, doorknobs need to twist to open a door. The United States began to manufacture door knobs after the American Revolution. As doors were being constructed thicker, doorknobs made it easier to open the door rather than having to push it. There was also an increase in crime during this time, making people in need of protecting themselves and their valuables. Some popular materials that the earliest doorknobs were made from included; ceramic, china, glass, wood, clay, and metal. In the end, metal became the most popular choice because it was the strongest and lasted the longest.
